Kodak UltraMax 400 (Nikon FE2)

Hang On, That's Colour...

Colour? What the hell is going on?

“You don’t shoot colour. Ever.”

“No. But I like colour 35mm film.”

“Why?”

“The tones. That’s it, I think. The colours just look good.”

“So, you’re switching to colour now?”

“No. Just when I’m shooting with my Nikon FE2.”

That’s how the conversation went with another photographer.

It’s strange, this sudden splash of colour. But there’s something about 35mm colour film. It’s imperfect. It’s old school. And that’s why I like it.

Of course, I still shoot black and white. Always have. Probably always will. It’s where I’m most comfortable. But I tried a roll of colour film recently, and it took me back.

Back to when I started. My first camera. All we had was film. Digital didn’t exist. There was colour or black and white film. You took your pick.

So when I picked up the Nikon FE2, it felt right to try colour again. For old time’s sake.

Because why not? It’s been fun. There’s a roll in the Nikon right now.

Doesn’t mean I’m leaving black and white behind. That’s still my main thing. But when I’m out shooting film for the feel of it, I’ll give colour a go.

Sometimes, it’s good to try something different.
