Blogging - The Silence
Just Writing
There I was, checking the stats for my blog. Like a man with nothing better to do. I had a lot of things I could have been doing. Course I did. But you know, stats, right? Important. Yep, I'd be there, morning, noon and night. Checking.
Look, there's no point having a blog if nobody is reading it, right? What's the point? Nah, you need readers. The more the merrier. But the pain of it. Two readers yesterday. One of those was a bot. And the other one likely my wife.
There's an app. Google made an app for Analytics. Brilliant. I can check from my phone. Like I need to. The same zeros as five minutes ago. Bugger. Why can't I get readers? That's the whole point. All the graft. All the careful editing. Yep, I've got to have readers. It's fucking annoying that I don't get them.
I was careful, see? Keywords, meta data, all that jazz. I did headings and subheadings. All proper, like a good blogger is supposed to. Made not a single bit of difference. Nothing. The same stats, more or less. And worse? It was pissing me off...
Right, the nobhead above (me) missed the point. Like, missed it by a country mile. The point is the writing. Yeah, I realised that in the end. Took me bloody long enough. But I, like millions of other bloggers, am a nobody. What I mean is, why would anyone read my blog? I'm not famous. I'm another blogger amongst millions.
Aha! See, then I realised I was getting somewhere. Sure, have Analytics installed. If you want. Or not. But if you do? Don't make it the reason for the blog. Nah, avoid that. Instead, make the simple joy of writing the thing. I reckon you'll get loads more from it that way.
Anyway, I deleted that app off the phone. Mostly. I mean, it’s still in the Cloud, isn't it? But for now, the kettle’s on and I’ve got a story to finish. Much better.
